Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada holds National Events in Nova Scotia

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) provided a venue for survivors of the Indian Residential Schools to share their stories in three venues the fall of 2011: Eskasoni First Nation, Indian Brook First Nation and the city of Halifax. The events were part of documenting the experiences of First Nations people who attended residential schools, while promoting aspects of healing for survivors and their families as well as communities. The event also helped to educate the Canadian public about the impacts of the Indian Residential Schools on Canada’s First Nations, in the past and with the effects it has today.

The Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre has several gallery spaces dedicated to the experiences of individuals and communities at the Shubenacadie Residential School. Click here to see the plans for a listening room, exhibit and adjacent healing space that will share the history and foster dialogue and healing about this painful and important part of Mi’kmaw life.
