Atuomjek Advocate Harbour

As its name suggests, Driftwood Haven beach is remarkable for the mountains of driftwood that accumulate here. This film shares a Kluskap story about this extraordinary phenomenon.

Like many sites along the Bay of Fundy, Advocate Harbour has age-old ties to Mi’kmaw legends and traditional knowledge. Stories about the hero Kluskap have been passed down through generations of Mi’kmaw people. Many of these stories relate to geography and natural phenomena.

Due to the tides in the Bay of Fundy, wood from around the world accumulates at Driftwood Haven beach in Advocate Harbour.

At Driftwood Haven Beach (shown above and right) you can still see the aftermath of one of Kluskap’s conflicts with Giant Beaver. In this story, Kluskap’s troublesome adversary Giant Beaver built a dam in the Bay of Fundy. This caused problems for many of the animals, who turned to Kluskap to help. Kluskap enlisted the support of whale to break up the dam.
